ALBERTA WILL BE MORE UNSTABLE AFTER THE ELECTION
We will elect another majority government but it will not be a stable government.
While many of us are still very focused on campaigns and campaigning, it's not too early to put some thought into the post-election regardless of which party forms government.
The major corporation leaders in the Alberta economy are already in that headspace. They are concerned that the divisive and polarized political culture is going to be a negative influence on business investment.
The uncertainty we are all feeling going into the election is not going away after the election. There will be another majority government after Monday but it will not bring any political stability. That is what's worrying industry decision makers.
That ambiguity and uncertainty coupled with the same reality in geopolitical volatility means investment is in jeopardy, especially large projects that have long term payback periods.
That hesitation psychology to withhold investing will tickle down and have negative impacts throughout business sectors all over Alberta.
This could be a good time for the oil and gas sector to be required to pivot and apply funds and workforces to wellsite cleanup on an accelerated basis.
That won't happen without political will to enforce the relevant laws. That hasn't ever been done before. So there is no reason to believe it will happen now, unless there is political pressure from citizens insisting to make it happen.
There are a lot of good jobs for energy service workers who already have the skills to do this necessary cleanup.
Can We the Citizens find the collective will and organize ourselves to create the necessary political will in our government?
This time of political instability is an opportunity to get serious about fixing this fiscal, environmental, health, and social disaster and make it an urgency?
Thanks Mark. I value your wisdom and your experience. I don't think our democracy can survive with only a 2 party option. Are you ready to work on democratic reform in Alberta, including getting rid of FPTP?
An excellent idea to build a constituency and engage citizens around. An Orphan Wells Collaborative could help accelerate shared action across Alberta. I have the inner workings and technology platform to equip that constituency. Reach out to me at 403.605.6493.
