We don't need to be concerned about voter suppression efforts this election. But that could change dramatically afterwards.
Let's not be naïve about the possibility of partisan-motivated voter suppression efforts in the next election. What if the seat distribution is close and there are obvious regional areas opposed to the winning Party.
Or even worse. What if we get a majority government this election but with fewer total votes than the opposition party? That uncertainty would be a strong motivation to manipulate the principles of democratic government and undermine the public trust in subsequent elections.
Why wouldn't a “winning” party abuse the absolute political power of a majority government to suppress voting in those places? What's to stop them from making such gerrymandering laws under such circumstances?
Partisan voter suppression laws is happening in many Republican controlled States now. It is in response to the dismal GOP electoral midterm election. We have a lot of evidence that the Smith version of the UCP likes to identify with Red State Republicans.
This election is very important but the outcome consequences re even more important because Democracy is at risk in this election. Become a Better Voter as a matter of a personnel commitment to Responsible Citizenship.
