You could soon be asked to sign a Referendum Petition with this question:

“Do you agree that Alberta should remain in Canada and any form of Separation should be rejected?”

If your answer is Yes, read on. If your answer is No, it would be best if you just moved on.

Yesterday, I joined forces with my friend Thomas Lukaszuk and filed an Application for a Citizen Initiative for a Referendum Petition based on that question.

We are organizing to gather signatures for a referendum petition from Albertans who oppose any form of Alberta separation from Canada.

We are calling our Alberta-focused group the FOREVER CANADIAN INITIATIVE.

We represent those citizens who believe that our Alberta includes Canada, just as others in the rest of the country believe their Canada includes Alberta.

The Separatists foolishly and recklessly want to divide Albertans. They want to isolate us from the rest of Canada. And once we are “independent,” many of these Extremist Separatists are committed to Alberta should fulfill Trump's fever dream and become his 51st. State.

That foolishness and recklessness is what the Forever Canadian Initiative is fighting against. We are the Separatists with our own Referendum Petition so Albertans can say YES to Alberta staying in Canada and rejecting any form is separation.

We must wait for Elections Alberta to approve our application before we can start collecting petition signatures. We will soon have a website where you can Pledge your support to sign the petition when we are authorized to collect signatures. So stay tuned

We will need at least 120,000 Albertans,18 or older, who have been ordinarily residents of the province for at least six months to sign the petition. Once approved, we will only have 120 days to collect all the necessary in-person signatures. It will be a blitz.

ARE YOU WILLING AND ABLE TO GET INVOLVED? WE'RE NOT QUITE READY

We will be recruiting qualified canvassers to help gather signatures from all over Alberta. In the meantime, if you want to be kept in the campaign loop, Google the Reboot Alberta Facebook Group. Join the more than 6,400 like-minded progressive, moderate, and pluralists who are standing up and taking care of Alberta.

To join, you will be asked to give me, as the Administrator, your name, your Alberta hometown, what area of government policy concerns you the most, and your personal email address. That is so I can keep you informed directly by email.

SOVEREIGNTY? WE ALREADY HAVE WITHOUT SEPARATION

What happens if we are successful? I suggest the best way for the Smith-UCP government to respond would be to repeal the Alberta Sovereignty Act. Its disingenuous Kafkaesque title says it's about a smSovereign Alberta “within a United Canada.”

Alberta already has all the jurisdictional sovereignty it needs under section 92 of the Constitution Act. The 1982 version of that federal law added the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I will write more later about what is so bad about Premier Smith's Pride and Joy Alberta Sovereignty Act. Suffice it to say it is, at best, clumsy political symbolism and, at worst, a clear and present danger to Alberta's responsible, accountable government.

So, if you don't want Alberta to leave Canada or become the 51st State, do you believe our legitimate grievances should be resolved by evidence-based good faith consultation, negotiated compromise, and creative design thinking?
